I was really nervous about doing the interview and was unsure about what questions were going to be fired my way, but the fact that Grimm is a family friend put me at ease, it was just like sitting at home and conversating. So for those of you who missed out and couldn't stay up here is a link so that you can listen to the interview. We discussed hair, my company BeUNIQUE Hair Care and education and my husband was even put on the spot!

Today I was thinking about the challenge, and I want to trim my ends and design one of those 'growth' t-shirts so I can see if my hair is growing or not, but once it's trimmed I want to gain back that length and then some. I've always been a believer that it's not just what goes on your hair that matters it's also what goes in your body, but really? Have I paid attention to that mantra? I think not! But this challenge is going to help me do that, also the fact that both hubby and I are trying to eat healthier is going to make this a little easier (after almost 6 years of living with each other I can finally put veg on his plate and he eats it! Praise Jesus! lol).

So anyway I came across HairCrush on YouTube, O MY GOSH! I WANT HER HAIR! NO! let me rephrase that I WANT HER LENGTH!

&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;MMMNMNMN&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;

In this video she's talking about her diet, and it got me thinking I really need to sort out my diet, I'm even tempted to go to my Mum's for some wheat grass shots (but only slightly!). After watching the video I decided to find out what foods are good for hair health. Below you'll find a list and comments on whether I'm going to try the food or not.

This list I sourced from Boots Web MD

Salmon

When it comes to foods that pack a beauty punch, it’s hard to beat salmon. Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, this high-quality protein source is also filled with vitamin B-12 and iron. “Essential omega-3 fatty acids are needed to support scalp health,” says dietitian Andrea Giancoli. Studies suggest a deficiency can result in a dry scalp and thus hair, giving it a dull look.

I like Salmon, not sure how regular I could eat it because it's an expensive fish but I'm sure I can eat other fish, and I will need to as I'm going to try and cut red meat out of my diet

Dark Green Veg

Popeye the Sailor Man didn’t eat all that spinach for healthy hair, but he could have. Spinach, like broccoli and Swiss chard, is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, which your body needs to produce sebum. The oily substance, secreted by your hair follicles, is the body’s natural hair conditioner.

I LOVE BROCCOLI it's my favourite veg, nuff said.

Beans

Legumes like kidney beans and lentils should be an important part of your hair-care diet. Not only do they provide plentiful protein to promote hair growth, but also ample iron, zinc and biotin. While rare, some small studies show biotin deficiencies can result in brittle hair.

Hmmmm, not sure 'bout this one. I like beans but I don't cook with them often apart from putting some pigeon peas in rice. I love mung beans but I forget to soak them over night so then I don't eat them. Then there's my Nigerian Mother in laws black eyed beans now they're nice. So now I think about it I do have options.

Nuts

Brazil nuts are one of nature’s best sources of selenium, which some studies show is an important mineral for the health of your scalp.Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that may help condition your hair. They are also a terrific source of zinc, as are cashews, pecans and almonds. A zinc deficiency can lead to hair shedding, so make sure nuts are a regular on your healthy hair menu.

I'm going to have to say no to this one, these are definitely<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> too expensive.

Poultry

Chickens and turkeys may have feathers, but the high-quality protein they provide will help give you the healthy hair you crave. “Without adequate protein or with low-quality protein, one can experience weak brittle hair, while a profound protein deficiency can result in loss of hair colour,” Giancoli tells us.

Easy!!!

Eggs

When it comes to healthy hair, it doesn't matter whether you like your eggs scrambled, fried or poached. However they're served, eggs are one of the best protein sources you can find. They also contain biotin and vitamin B-12.

This is easy too, but perhaps I can set myself a challenge of finding different ways of cooking eggs

Whole Grains

Sink your teeth into hearty whole grains, including wholegrain bread and fortified wholegrain breakfast cereals, for a hair-healthy dose of zinc, iron and B vitamins. A wholegrain snack can also be a great option when your energy is zapped halfway through the afternoon and you've still got hours to go before dinner.

We eat brown rice in my house, wholemeal spaghetti and seeded brown bread, and I have porridge oats with Honey and linseeds EVERY morning.

Oysters

Oysters may be better known for their reputation as an aphrodisiac, but they can also lead to healthy hair - and who doesn't love that? The key to their love- and hair-boosting abilities is zinc - a powerful antioxidant.

If oysters don't make a regular appearance on your dinner plate, don't despair. In addition to getting it from whole grains and nuts, you can also get zinc from beef and lamb, or if you’re a vegetarian from pumpkin seeds and chickpeas.

Um, na, tried these for a Valentines dinner years ago, they're a bloody pain to cook. I don't like pumpkin seeds for the simple fact they get stuck in my teeth, I do like me some chickpeas, especially in curry. Ah, a good Trini curry - Chicken, chana, and dhal made with lentils, that's a good meal for the hair and my favourite dish!

Low-fate diary products

Low-fat dairy products like skimmed milk and yoghurt are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth. They also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources. For some healthy hair foods on the go, try adding a yoghurt or cottage cheese cup to your bag when you head out in the morning to snack on later in the day. You can even boost their hair benefits by stirring in a couple of tablespoons of ground flaxseeds or walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids and zinc.

My diet doesn't consist of much dairy, I don't drink milk (I make my oats with water), I do eat cheese no sure how low fat it is, and actually I'm quite partial to some natural yoghurt over fruit.

Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which promotes a healthy scalp along with good vision.

Since a healthy scalp is essential for a shiny, well-conditioned head of hair, you’d be wise to include carrots in your diet as snacks or toppings on your salad.

This with be easy to incorporate into a salad which we usually have with every meal. Also need to be organic.

Now I know some smarty pants is going to say WATER, YOU NEED TO DRINK WATER, and I'm going to try, BUT only because I'm doing a little test. Personally I don't believe the hype about drinking a certain amount of water a day. For as long as I can remember I have had a limited daily fluid intake, and when I say limited I mean 1 glass a day. I have no health issues, my hair grows, is not dry, I have nails that grow long, strong and healthy, I don't have problem skin and I go to the toilet like clock work, in fact it we're talking number ones I go more often than someone who does drink a lot in a day. I think my body is used to me not drinking a lot, and the only thing that scares me about drinking more is HOW MUCH MORE I'M GOING TO NEED THE TOILET! Being a teacher toilet breaks have to scheduled lol! I don't heart water :(

Reason being that I have had two cheap ones and I don't feel that I've done my hair any good, so as I embark on this Curls of Joy hair challenge I will start with a fresh trim. The got the Glamtech Certo scissors from www.coolblades.co.uk for £15.99, I some may think what!! But it's better to invest in some goods ones rather than to keep replacing my cheapies, also this is resonable, and you can get cheaper ones on the site.

For give me for being slow, but I was (and still am) a big fan of the YouTuber Mahogany Curls but she went on hiatus, and I didn't really know that she was back until today! So anyway in my search for her I came across a new hair challenge. I've never been a big fan of hair challenges but I want to pay even more attention to hair in order to gain some length. If you want to join the challenge check out the Curls of Joy blog, you need to register by March 25th.

Monday is the day! I am scared and excited all at the same time, scared because I don't want anything to go wrong and I want everyone to like the product,s and excited because as soon as the money starts coming in I can start expanding the brand and add more products. Due to the fact that I am funding this venture myself I can only launch with two products, before the end of the year I hope to have at least 7 on the website! It's hard being just one person having to create all the goodies and also having a full time job, but hopefully in the near future this business will be my full time job.
4Nappiness4evahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09491268440873731794noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8468581978868788648.post-61446311573216180592011-12-30T18:00:00.000+00:002011-12-30T18:00:08.618+00:00Mini Twists

I have enjoyed 2 weeks of bliss with my hair in mini twists, and I'm just about to was to now. Doing mini twists has allowed me to have fun with my hair without getting any tangles, and yeah, it may tak awhile to put it but I felt it was worth it, so worth it that I'm going to put them back in! Puting them in also allowed me to compare my length to other times I had them in. I made sure I moisturised every day with a sprtiz that had a pH between 4.5-5, I know that a lot of natural like to moisturise with just water but it has a pH of 7 which isn't the natural pH of our hair and can cause frizz. I locked in the moisture with Butta' Shine, and used it on the ends of my hair as as well. Here are some pictures of my mini twists before and now.

Braaap, Braaaap, Braaaap! To Angel from The Natural Lounge for putting on a GREAT event on Saturday, I went home with a sense of euphoria after being in the presence of so many natural women and in the company of much positive vibes.

I was blessed enough to be part of a weekend long event involving Angel and Naptural Roots magazine, which meant that I was able to meet my ultimate hairspiration Mahogany Boisseau along with the founder of Naptural Roots Magazine LeAnne Dolce and spend the weekend in the company of some beautiful natural Nubian Queens.

The Naturally Fabulous event was great for those who wanted to network, to gain understanding and also encouragement with regard to their natural journey. There was such a positive energy about the whole event and something that really touched me and affected me was seeing Mumplus2 there with her daughter, why? You may ask, because after hearing Mahogany talk about the fact that she does what she does for the children, I realised that right then and there amongst positive Black female roles models was where Mumplus2’s daughter should have been. All little Black girls need to be at events such as The Naturally Fabulous event so that their ideas of beauty and are not always the weavalicious women that they see on MTV Base.

It was great to meet so many YouTube subbies and meet up with my fellow YouTube sisters. The amount of people asking me if I was selling my products at the event has made me realise I need to get my butt in gear and sort it out, and big a big shout out to Fusion of Cultures aka Laila-Jean for rocking her twists and telling everyone that asked that she used Mango Twist, I swear when she loaded her YouTube video I got about 30 new subbies! Of you got Mango Twist in your goody bag please email me and tell me what you think info@beuniquehaircare.co.uk

The event also had a fashion show which I was a part of along with Shereen Corbin, Michelle Doyle, TheNaprika Stacey, Ero aka Natureal Rox and one more lady (whose name I shall include when I remember or when someone prompts me). I have to say we all rocked the runway wearing outfits and jewellery by Yorubatik and Blackamoor Clothing. A big shout out to Melissa and Huguette of Bespoke Hairstyles who did my hair and all the models hair for the day.

Anyhow the reason I’m posting now is because I finally have a hair routine! This will be my 4th week of my 6 week cycle and I have noticed improvements in my hair. Before I reveal that, something that has drastically changed my hair and the amount I loose on wash day is NOT USING A COMB, BRUSH OR TANGLE TEEZER TO DETANGLE, yes I only finger detangle every week and comb detangle with my Hercules Comb once a month. I don’t get any fairy knots and tangles have drastically reduced.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), B6 (Pyridoxine), B6 (Folic Acid), B12 (Cyanocobalmin), magnesium, and manganese help blood circulation and transport oxygen to hair follicle, they also enhance hair growth.

Lack of Vitamin C will result in split ends and brittle condition in hair.

Copper functions in the formation of maintenance of hair pigments. It maintains healthy hair color and condition; lack of copper will result in turning into white hair.

Iron is an essential mineral for the formation of red blood cells. Therefore, a person with anemia can suffer from hair loss easily.

Zinc prevents skin follicle infection and prevents hair loss.

Contains the mineral sulfur, the integral element of hair that gives it gloss and sheen.

Riboflavin (B2)This vitamin is essential for body cell respiration and to ensure efficient utilization of oxygen for cell production and repair. If your eyes are sensitive to light, you may be deficient in B-2, or Riboflavin, present in milk. Unhealthy scalp and hair loss have been traced to B-2 deficiencies.

Niacin (B3)Has a dilating effect on vessels and capillaries thereby increasing circulation to the scalp and stimulating hair growth. Niacin may also reduce the accumulation of cholesterol which is important since cholesterol on the scalp converts to the enzyme 5 alpha reductase.

*** Vitamins B1, B2 and B3 are energy producers.

Pahtothenic Acid (B5)This vitamin restores color brightness to hair and works with Folic Acid, PABA, Copper and the amino acid Tyrosine in the prevention of gray and white hair.

Pyridoxine (B6)
This vitamin is responsible for balance of protein intake, especially Cysteine, and helps to transport amino acids to the proper tissues. It is also needed in the conversion of one amino acid to another such as the conversion of Methionine to Cysteine. It is also a factor in the metabolism of Essential Fatty Acids for healthy skin and hair. It works with Inositol to regulate the flow of oils to the skin and scalp.

Biotin (B7)
Also referred to as "Vitamin H", promotes hair growth. Biotin is a common and important ingredient in hair products because it promotes hair health. Biotin is needed for healthy hair and skin and may even prevent hair loss. Biotin-increases the elasticity of the hair's cortex preventing breakage. It also thickenss the actual hair cuticle providing a fuller appearance because of the increased diameter of the hair shaft.

So I have 4 conditioners that I’m going to consider. The first is one that I used early on in my journey and that’s Garnier Fructis Repair and Shine, I stopped using this once my TWA stage had passed and I wasn’t co-washing as much. I recently re-purchased it and it has a new formula, so I want to see how it works in my hair. The second conditioner is a winner so far and it’s The Body Shop Rainforest Moisture, I’m on my second bottle and so far so good. The third conditioner purchased today and not used yet is Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture conditioner, and the fourth is Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (and yes I know I’m late), this is one that I’ve picked up and put down on many a visit to the supermarket because it has cones it, but I’m going to give it a try and it has a new formula.

First things first, I’m going to look up ALL the ingredients and then decide if I want to go any further and then I’ll get back on how they fair.

GARNIER FRUCTIS - REPAIR & SHINE

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
Pracaxi (or “pracachy”) is a tree widely distributed in the lowland Neotropics. The pracaxi tree has fruits that contain seed from which the pracaxi oil is extracted. The oil extracted from the pracaxi seeds is used by the Amazonian riverside populations in several ways. Its antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-hemorrhagic properties have made the plant traditional among local inhabitants in the treatment of snake bites, healing of ulcers and surgical sanitation. It also has several applications in the cosmetic industry. As a powerful dermatological moisturiser, the pracaxi oil helps cell renewal and treats stretch marks, skin spots, depigmentation, severe acne, and scars. When applied to hair care products, it provides an excellent conditioning effect, eases combing, and enhances hair smoothness and shine.

I send her stuff primarily because she has tried A LOT of hair products and I feel she is best placed to give valuable feedback, and she draws comparisons to other products which will be useful for some people when the range is released.

I've been in the kitchen today making up other batch of my Moisture Custard, which is highly moisturising, and I have reformulated Mango Twist, hoping to get safety assessment done for 3 products by the end of June. Then I need to sort out the challenge testing.4Nappiness4evahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09491268440873731794noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8468581978868788648.post-25482920686392442662011-05-29T21:47:00.002+01:002011-05-29T23:17:40.607+01:00Hair News #2I came across 2 new books this week one courtesy of Kimmay Tube, and the second I just stumbled across, I haven't purchased them but they will be on my wish list.
I love surfing the net looking for new ingredients and finding out what others are saying about hair or doing with their hair.

Five Ways to Get Water into Your Hair

I am a big advocate of placing and keeping moisture, which is water, into the hair. In a worse case scenario, without water being present within the hair structure, you doom the hair to a shortened life span. In other scenarios, dry, thirsty hair tends to be dull and lacks shine. Since water is good for your hair, let's talk about some ways to get it there.

Rinse Your Hair With Very Warm Water: The easiest way to get water in your hair is to saturate or rinse your hair with water. Warm water will penetrate hair faster than colder water. You don't want the water to be boiling hot!
